The Special Superintendency of Rome, with Electa, starts a night-time tour of the most evocative of ancient Rome. From August 18 to October 3, 2017, every Tuesday and Friday evening, the Caracalla Baths will be accessible at night with guided tours. Groups of up to 25 participants will be able to admire the monumental vestiges illuminated in the night and descend into the underground, maze of galleries and pulsating heart of the entire building where the services that spawned the spas were installed. Included in the visit is the carriageway of Caracalla, the largest of those left in Rome and perfectly preserved, where all the mystery of the cult of Mitra is perceived.
The visits, which last for 75 minutes, will start at 19.30, with the last departure at 9.00 pm, thanks to a spectacular illumination of the monument by Acea. However, during the long days of August and the beginning of September for the first shifts you will be able to admire the Terme built by the Severi emperors in the golden light of the sunset. It is right from the central area of the spa complex that begins the visits, led by archaeologists and art historians. In addition to the main core consisting of gyms, dressing rooms, frigidarium, tepidarium, caldarium, natatio there were high enclosures, which housed shops, libraries, meeting rooms, porches to protect themselves against heat and rain. The ruins of the Baths of Caracalla, still admired by the remarkable height of over 37 meters in many places, today give an idea of the grandeur of the spa complex. The size of the building and the monumentality of the rooms, preserved for two floors upstairs and three underground levels, allow us to imagine the brightness that the light of the night exacerbates today. The visit then ends in the underground, where an Antiquarium is set up with finds from the spa itself, passing from the roundabout where Michelangelo Pistoletto's Reintegrated apple is located, and then to Mitreo, where the mysterious fossa sanguinis is visible.Every Friday and Tuesday evening from 18 August to 3 October 2017Timetable:
